Mad Mental Strategies

In maths last week we revised our doubles facts. Mrs M explained why knowing our doubles facts off by heart helps us to solve heaps of sums mentally. We started of with the simple doubles facts:

After this, some of us said 'come on Mrs M this is way too easy!' But then Mrs M explained how we could use our doubles facts to solve bigger sums like:

If we know 3  +   3   =  6
Then we know that   30  +  30  =  60
and we also know that  300  +  300  =  600
and that 3000  +  3000  =  6000
So then when we started looking at REALLY big sums like 3300  +  3330  =
We knew that 3000 + 3000 = 6000 and 300 + 300 = 600 plus 30 gave us 6630! We were quite surprised at just how easy maths can be once you find a pattern!
Some Cool Kids Getting Familiar with their Doubles Facts!

We also played a pretty cool little game called 'Near Doubles Bingo'. We loved it so much that Mrs M agreed to put the playing board and cards on our blog so we can print and play it with our families at home!
