What a Braintastic Day!

This week we have been learning all about the human brain! We started off by watching some interesting video clips, that explained what the different parts of the brain did.

We learnt that  the brain has many different parts that work together. Some of the main parts we learnt about were these:

  1. cerebrum (say: suh-REE-brum)
  2. cerebellum (say: sair-uh-BELL-um)
  3. brain stem or Medulla
  4. pituitary (say: puh-TOO-uh-ter-ee) gland
  5. hypothalamus (say: hy-po-THAL-uh-mus)

To help us remember the parts of our brains and how they worked we decided to make 'Brain Caps'. These 'Brain Caps' showed us where each part and of the brain was, and what function it has when we put them on our heads. Check them out....Don't we look so much smarter with our brains on the outside of our heads?!

The next step was to take a look at a REAL brain! We learnt that all mammals' brains are pretty similar, so we decided to have a closer look at a lamb's brain. This was great fun because we could actually see the parts of the brain that we had learnt about! We were all able to find the cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem and medulla! Some of us even found the Thalamus! We were extremely surprised to find that the brains didn't actually feel wrinkly like they looked, but were very smooth and slimy!

Here are some tips for looking after your brain!

Your brain is protected inside your skull but could still be damaged if your head is hit or bumps into something hard.
  • wearing safety gearAlways wear a helmet if you are riding a bike, scooter or skate board.
  • Always wear a helmet for sports where you could be hit or fall, eg baseball or horse-riding .
  • Never dive into water unless you know how deep it is. (Your brain should let you know that this is not a smart thing to do.)
Apart from making sure that you don't injure your brain, you can also make sure that you help your brain by:
  • getting plenty of sleepEating healthy food like fish and fresh vegetables.
  • Exercising your brain by learning new things and trying to remember them.
  • Getting plenty of sleep.
Mrs M said that we were all fantastic Brainiacts!
